DIY cell phone car mount

"

Since my adventure with Android began, I haven't found two things I needed for it: (1) good mount/holder, (2) good case. Why car mount for Android? Well, with Android came new things that I started to use. Among others it's streaming radio and GPS trail, so it's useful to have this thing mounted on dashboard.

Recently, I found RadioShack's Superlock Fasteners that I purchased long time ago to mount my GPS navigator. I never actually ended up doing it, but decided this could be useful now for Android G1.

Superlock Fasteners is actually very similar to velcro. The difference is velcro is soft and superlock fasteners is hard plastic. Consequently, the reasons for choosing this — superlock fasteners isn't as good dust and junk collector as velcro is. Even if some dust collects it's easier to clean than softer velcro material. Also since it's harder, it's more solid than velcro. Declared load strength for this is

  1. tensile disengagement strength: 20 lbs. per square inch,
  2. separation strength: 10 lbs. per square inch,
  3. tensile strength: 4 lbs. per square inch,
  4. sheer strength: 4 lbs. per square inch.

The only issue with superlock fasteners is it is hard to take it apart once it's been locked. But no problem. I decided to have more superlock surface on dash board and less on the device. I achieved that by having less material on device as well as cutting some superlock hooks off that are on the device. That would make unhooking it easy and painless.

As can be observed, a number of rows of hooks have been cut off.

It has been about a week now that I've had this setup. Works perfectly and the phone never fell down. Hooks are very solid even though I removed a number of rows.

One concern that I have is that it is quite easy to bend the hooks on the device. I have been careful with device so far, but have not changed my habits. I still throw the device in the trousers pocket to carry it around.
