Driving aids

"

I am still getting to know my new car. One of the new features of the new car is one (among others?) driving aid, which at first might be upsetting to hard-core manual transmission lover as myself. But eventually I got over it. I always look at the sport of Formula One, and how many driving aids F1 drivers have.

What I am talking about is pretty interesting thing that I've never heard of. Imagine you're sitting in your car at intersection awaiting green light. Also imagine that you're driving up hill and there is a car behind you and it is really close to you. Naturally, when you're driving manual transmission you would be worried that car will roll backwards (because you're driving uphill) as you engage clutch. So at green signal, you will either attempt to engage clutch quicker or help yourself with e-brake.

Well new Subaru has that taken care of for you. What happens is this. As you release brake pedal, touch gas pedal and engage clutch, somehow your car will not roll backwards. After further testing I found that this will occur only for no more than 2 seconds. If the car doesn't move forward, this security mechanism or whatever one calls it will release this and car will roll backwards.

I am surprised I haven't read or heard about this thing before. I will have to do some googling about this when I have some free time.

Update: the mechanism described above is called Hill holder, also referred to as "Hill assist".
